I bet a chunk of the performance difference is because those games are primarily developed to run on DirectX.
When they switch more low-level but platform-agnostic interfaces to the GPUs (don’t care enough ’bout games to remember the fancy names) the difference will probably shrink.
When War Craft 3 was released and OpenGL still was a think it would run faster under Wine using that than natively on Windows with DirectX.
