Joe, presumably the desktop and NAS both have wired connections to the router. Is the performance not sufficient to mount the NAS with samba on the desktop and avoid dealing with any file syncing complications? If not, syncthing might be a good option. If you want to schedule an rsync job, you could try using anacron instead of cron to account for the unpredictable schedule of the desktop
